Lumbini is the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became the Buddha, and is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the world. The UNESCO World Heritage Site features the Maya Devi Temple, which marks the exact spot of Buddha's birth, the sacred Bodhi tree, Ashoka Pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC, and the sacred pond where Maya Devi bathed before giving birth. The Lumbini Development Zone spans 4.7 sq km and includes monasteries built by Buddhist nations from around the world, each showcasing their unique architectural traditions. The site is divided into the Sacred Garden, the Monastic Zone (East for Theravada, West for Mahayana), and the Lumbini Museum.
