Boudhanath Stupa is one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world and the center of Tibetan Buddhist culture in Nepal. Standing 36 meters tall, the mandala-shaped stupa is surrounded by monasteries, shops, and restaurants. The all-seeing eyes of Buddha gaze out from each side of the golden spire. Pilgrims and visitors walk clockwise around the stupa, spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras. The surrounding neighborhood has a distinctly Tibetan character, with many refugees having settled here after fleeing Tibet. The area comes alive during Buddhist festivals, especially Losar (Tibetan New Year) and Buddha Jayanti.
