Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve protects around 175 sq km of wetlands, grasslands and floodplain along the Sapta Koshi River in the eastern Terai. Designated a Ramsar site of international importance, it is the finest birdwatching location in the country, with over 480 recorded bird species including huge numbers of migratory waterfowl in winter. It shelters the last surviving population of wild water buffalo (Arna) in Nepal, along with Gangetic dolphins, gharial and mugger crocodiles, and spotted deer. Quiet, flat and far less touristed than Chitwan or Bardia, it rewards visitors with boat trips, gentle walks and authentic Tharu and Koshi culture.
