Upper Mustang, also known as the Kingdom of Lo, was a restricted demilitarized area closed to foreigners until 1992. This remote region preserves an authentic Tibetan Buddhist culture virtually unchanged for centuries. The landscape is dramatically different from the rest of Nepal — arid, desert-like terrain with colorful eroded cliffs, deep gorges, and ancient cave dwellings. The walled city of Lo Manthang, the former capital, contains medieval monasteries, a royal palace, and a traditional way of life. The trek follows ancient salt trading routes between Tibet and the lowlands of Nepal.
